We have incorporated! This is a great time
to come on-board. The info on this page pertains to individual greyhound ownership. A separate page is under construction
that will explain the corporate concept.
Currently, each share is $750 and a minimum of one share is required. The price per share is subject to
change, and will likely be between $800-1,000 per share for the reminder of 2008. If you are considering coming on board
please feel free to contact us and we can provide an exact price per share for a fixed period of time.
Ownership Privileges
Shenandoah Racing Greyhounds wants
every partner to take part in the experience of greyhound ownership. At this time we currently sell 50% and 25% interest
in our pups. If you want to get started in greyhound ownership, a partnership may be the perfect place to start. As a greyhound
owner you will have access to any and all facilities connected to your greyhound. We encourage you to meet the breeders
and trainers involved in the racing process. We have been fortunate to meet some of the best greyhound breeders, trainers,
and kennel owners in greyhound racing. We look forward to getting you in touch with them so you may learn and enjoy the sport
as much as we do. Unless you live in areas near greyhound tracks, it may be difficult for you to get out to the racetrack and you’re
your greyhound run. Thanks to the internet, most greyhound tracks currently provide free live racing simulcasts
straight to your home. Rosnet even provides programs, detailed entry, results, and
race replays.
Day at the Track
Training Expenses
From the time of your investment (which
covers the cost of your greyhound) through the 17th month (or when your greyhound is determined to be track-ready),
you will be responsible for your greyhound’s monthly expenses (25% or 50% depending on ownership terms).
Greyhounds in the runs (3 to 12 months of
age): Approximately $95.00/month
Greyhounds in training/schooling (12 to 17 months of
age): Approximately $140.00/month
Racing Expenses Veterinary
certification (health certificate): The heath certification ensures that the greyhound is sound (free of injury or ailments) prior to shipping.
Greyhound Haulers: The cost of hauling your greyhound ranges between $50- $100, depending on the destination. Once
your greyhound is track-ready, we will insure that your greyhound is placed with an appropriate kennel based on your greyhounds
racing aptitude. All greyhounds racing at a track must race through a “racing kennel.” You will lease your greyhound
to a racing kennel for an owner’s commission (negotiable, usually 35-50% of the purse). When your greyhound is racing
at a track you will not acquire any expenses, other than added veterinary (if your greyhound suffers a serious injury or illness).
The racing kennel pays for board, worming, feed, immunizations, and veterinary exams.
Racing Licenses: When your greyhound is placed in a racing kennel, it is the owner’s responsibility to acquire a racing owner’s
license in the jurisdiction of the track. Licensing fees vary by state (approximately $20-$150).
NGA Membership: Full membership initiation fee: $100, annual dues: $70. Membership includes: subscription
to the “Greyhound Review,” discounted registration fees, and as well as the ability to vote for
greyhounds of the year and NGA District Representatives. For more details please visit the NGA.
GRA Membership (Recommended): The GRA (a non-profit
association) promotes responsible greyhound ownership. Annual membership fee: $35. Please visit the GRA/America.
GlobalGreyhounds.com Membership (Recommended): A terrific
way to network, learn more, and stay on top of the latest news and information around the world regarding greyhound racing.
Annual membership fee: $30.
Return on your investment
Investing in greyhounds is risky. Ways to financially succeed
in greyhound racing include: racing purses, sale of greyhounds as racing prospects (either private sale or NGA Auctions),
and/or breeding prospects.
Purse Distributions Greyhound track distribute
a percentage of the earnings to the racing kennels. The purse distributions nary dramatically from track to track. All tracks
pay on a per point basis. This means that each grade carries a specific point value, which is (normally) divided amongst the
top four finishers (1st – 50%, 2nd – 25%, 3rd – 15%, 4th –
10%). The spreadsheet below gives a breakdown of each tracks payout for 1st – 4th place, in Grades
M through A/AA. The dollar value also dramatically defers among the tracks, ranging from $15 to $350. If you do not have Microsoft
Excel you may download it here.
The owner receives a percentage of the purse (normally between
35%- 50%).
In sum, approximate owner payout is as follows: Grade A (Slots Track) $300 to $400 Grade A (Regular Track)
$100 to $300.
The greyhounds racing ability will determine which level of
racing they will be most competitive. The bottom line is that your greyhounds earning will depend of his/her ability and
performance. As you can see there is no guarantee in this process. We target the best, proven pedigrees; make sure they get
the best training and care; and run them at the track that suits their ability. Thus, their earnings can be summarized as
follows (based on an average of 3 races ever 2 weeks [75 races per year] consistent Grade A greyhound):
Top Track (Casino/Slots): Approximately $25,000/year
Intermediate Track: Approximately $10,000/year
Low Grade Track: Approximately $2,500/year
